The Eighth Commandment

In the ten commandments, God provides the basics of human existence. In this short list we see both all that we are to be, yet all that we are not. Thus the commandments both empower and crush. They empower us to be all that God intends for us. And they crush us with the knowledge that we live far from his intention. As we align our lives to these simple commandments, we do so as imperfect people. This fact continually draws us back to the first of the ten – faithful trust in a merciful God. Today we look at the Eighth Commandment.

The Heart Clings

“That to which your heart clings and entrusts itself is, I say, really your god. The purpose of this commandment (first) is to require true faith and confidence of the heart, and these fly straight to the one true God and cling to him alone. The meaning is this: ‘See to it that you let me alone be your God, and never seek another.’”

    - Martin Luther, on the first commandment

Contentment

Very few are happy with their circumstances these days. It’s hard to find the “ideal” house, school, job, situation, or spouse. In I Tim. 6, Paul introduces us to the word “contentment.” Contentment is more than happiness. It means being satisfied with your circumstance, whether it is ideal or not. The question is, how can I be content in circumstances that are far from ideal?

Wealthy Poor and the Church

We commonly compare our status with the status of others, be it economic, physical, or otherwise. Either we lament our own poverty in comparison to what others have, or we look down on those with less because we have more. But what would it be like to see others without comparing degrees of success or failure? What would it take to live selflessly and bear the burdens of others?

Passed Down

We pause in our “Wealthy Poor” series to reflect on the relocation of our worship space to the Grandel Theater. Why did we move? Why here? What are we doing? Monumental shifts in culture are shaking the 21st century church to the core. Reliant stands as a mission of a larger church, Christ Memorial, and a larger Lutheran heritage. One question we’re trying to answer is “How are we the church in this place at this time?” It is our task to take the gospel that has been passed down to us and bear it faithfully in our appointed time. Dr. Norman Nagel writes, “Each generation receives from those who went before, and in making that tradition its own, adds what may best serve in its own day – the living heritage and something new.” We press on with what was passed down. And we bring to it “something new.”
